Srinagar: A young girl died while soldiers killed a leopard and another one was captured alive by the Police in the border district Kupwara on Monday. Witnesses said a leopard mauled a 12-year old girl to death in Lolab area Monday afternoon. A leopard appeared in Syed Mohalla of village Dardpora in Lallpora area of Lolab and dragged a 12-year-old Ulfat Jaan daughter of Altaf Hussain Shah from the compound of his house, a local told Kashmir Observer over phone.
He said, the locals after reaching on the spot found the victim in a pool of blood. The victim was shifted to a nearby hospital where doctors declared her brought dead.
Later the villagers staged massive protest against wildlife authorities for failing to prevent entry of wild animals in residential areas. Wild animals have unleashed terror in the entire area and are on a killing spree. We cant venture out of our homes after dusk, protesters said,
Meanwhile, Army on Monday said that it shot a man-eater wild bear in Handwara area in the same district.
Late last night troopers of 21 RR spotted the wild beast near Tompura village, the bear had also attacked the army squad. The troopers immediately fired upon the bear and killed him instantly, an army official said.
A senior wildlife official while confirming the killing of bear said that the animal had turned man- eater and had injured many humans in the recent past besides killing dozens of livestock.
Children were scared to venture out of homes as man-eater was on the prowl in village. The beast had become a threat for human beings, a local news agency quoted residents as having said.
However, the villagers said that many bears and leopards are on prowl in the area. These beasts often venture out of the woods and enter the villages that are closer forest and attack people, particularly children and women, they added.
Residents of many other villages including Kandi, Pazalpora, Balipora, Vilgam, Dardpora, Bakiakar and Wadipora said: We are living under constant fear and threat. Our lives have become miserable.
Police capture wild bear
A police officer said that a police team captured a wild bear from Balipora area of Pazalpora village in Handwara.
A police official said that locals informed police after they spotted a wild bear wandering in the village.
The police team was immediately rushed to the area which chased the bear after which the animal ran towards the Nallah where it got stuck. The police team after about four hours of wait managed to capture the bear, he said.
The animal was later handed over to the wildlife department.
Pertinently, the man- animal conflict has witnessed an increase in the Kashmir during the past few years. The number of such conflict related incidents is increasing with each passing day.
Official records maintain that wild animals have killed over 100 persons, while more than 30 wild animals were killed in retaliation by villagers and wildlife officials across Kashmir during the past three years.
