Ganderbal: Two storey building of Mansbal Sanik School was gutted in a devastating fire incident in central Kashmirs Ganderbal district on Sunday night, officials said on Monday.
Giving details Principal Sanik School Mansbal, Gayasuddin told a local news agency that fire emanated from the roof top last night. No student was present in the building as they were busy in taking dinner in another building, however, their belongings including study material was destroyed in the fire that was doused around 2am in the morning, he said adding that the school authorities will initiate a separate investigation to ascertain the cause of the fire.
As the word about the incident spread, hundreds of parents from across Kashmir reached the spot to enquire about the well being of their children.
The students, according to police, were shifted to safer places while all efforts were made to extinguish the fire that engulfed the whole building.
A police official said that all but 15 fire tenders were put into service to douse the fire. Keeping the intensity of fire into view, fire tenders from Srinagar were also called and it was only after six hours of hardwork that fire was put out, he said adding that at least five fire fighters were injured during the process.
Meanwhile, General Officer Commanding Chinar Corps Subrata Saha along with Commanding Officers of 13 and 5 RR, Brigadier 3 Sector, Additional SP Ganderbal and other police and administration officials visited the spot to assess the situation. Saha distributed Rs 1.20 lakhs among the affected sixty students and assured them further help in near future. He also distributed blankets, bed sheets and tents among the students. Whatever help we can do, we will do. We have provided monetary help to the students and I hope the state government will also help the school authorities, Saha told reporters after assessing the loss caused by fire.
A police official said that a case in this regard has been registered and investigation have been taken up to ascertain the cause of fire.
Sanik School Mansbal was established by the Sainik Schools Society and founded by then-Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Sheikh Abdullah in 1980. The school comes under the control of state government and Ministry of Defence and was also the first Sainik School in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
