The day of Eid begins with glory unmatched. There is hope in the air and joy – a blessed day after a blessed month.
So what makes Eid special? A lot of things; the Eid Namaz, the grand feast and catching up with all loved ones. But there is yet another thing that adds lots of colors to this wonderful day- Kids!
Days before Eid begins, children commence their preparations. Shopping for lovely little dresses, trying them on a million times before the actual Eid Day and discussing enthusiastically with their mates the various things they would do on Eid. Then they wait eagerly and with mounting impatience.
So when the blessed day arrives at last, the air is full of enthusiasm and bliss that is radiated by children all over the valley. It is perhaps their bubbling fervor that makes the day glitter with resplendent light.
The streets are full of children dressed in bright colors just like flowers that glow under the sun. You spot little girls in their flowing dresses and tended to tresses, their bejeweled sandals clicking on the streets as they trot on their little feet. The streets seem to be bedecked with buntings! Girls often walk in groups with the eldest girl leading like a lady.
Little boys are in no way left behind! They happily flaunted their bright shirts and new jeans. The tiny shoes they wear are a matter of great pride to them. Boys are also seen bursting crackers on the streets with the youngest boys following the footprints of the oldest. This gives the little girls quite a scare!
Sucking ices with the hard earned Eidi and pockets bulging with sweets, the kids sure are an epitome of happiness.
Their bliss is limitless. They move about with not a worry in the world! Living every moment of their lives as a gift and deriving joy from all things big and small. Elders sure could pick a leaf out of their books!
My heart springs with joy at the sight of these children and I am transpoted back to my childhood. I remember my enthusiasm on Eid and all the tantrums I threw to acquire my favorite dress. My reverie is always very nurturing. May our lives be filled with joy and may the children of the valley never lose their childhood.
