Israels military offensive inside Gaza has entered the fourth week. In terms of duration, it has already surpassed operation Cast Lead, which Israel conducted in Gaza in 2008-09. About 1400 Palestinians were killed in that bloody offensive, while 13 Israelis were also killed. Besides these deaths, the operation led to massive damage to property. This time, Israel used the pretext of the death of three Israeli youngsters to launch an all out offensive in Gaza. This was initially limited to airstrikes but later on Israeli Army alos got involved and entered the Gaza strip in the second week after the offensive was started. Israel has not only unleashed offensive on the ground against hapless and unarmed civilians inside Gaza, but it has been accompanied by a massive diplomatic offensive and propaganda and misinformation. The Americans as usual have been the strongest supporters of Israeli aggression in Gaza, duly supported by some other Western powers like the UK. From day one, Israels propaganda machinery has been in full swing calling this asymmetric violence by Israel a its right to self defence. From blaming HAMAS for the death of the three Israeli youngsters, claims which were subsequently found to be false, to blaming them for launching rockets inside Israel, the Zionist State has left no chance to kill civilians in Gaza and destroy their properties and infrastructure. It seems nothing seems to be sacrosanct for Israel in Gaza, be it killing children on a beach, to bombing UNHRWA schools and killing children inside to targeting hospitals, blowing up a power station, thereby putting extreme pressure on hospitals and other emergency services. It seems that Israel doesnt care about any international laws. Its arrogance and insensitivity can be understood given that it has got carte blanche from its mentors like the US. Aside from making some routine noises, the UN has been reduced to a mere spectator in this ongoing orgy of violence unleashed by Israel. The Arab countries like Saudi Arabia and Egypt are alleged to be on the Israeli side, closely coordinating with Israel in this operation against Gaza.
So far this offensive has resulted in more than 1200 deaths, with injuries to more than 7200 people. About 450,000 people, which represents 25% of population in Gaza has been displaced due to this Israeli offensive. Infrastructure has been massively damaged with the only thermal power plant in Gaza having been attacked a few days back. Hospitals, schools and refugee shelters have also been damaged and destroyed. It seems Israel is making all out efforts to bring the hapless population in Gaza to their knees and into submission. Israel has only relied on massive firepower to deal with the situation in Gaza. This firepower has not been targeted at any military installations, but in densely populated civilian areas, causing maximum damage to life and property.
Israel and its proxies in the media have sold this military offensive against Gazan civilians as a war. If one were to just look at the imbalance of power on the two sides, one can see through this lie easily. On the one side, is the Israeli Army, one of the worlds largest armies, with the latest weapons and technology and backed by an equally large air force, against HAMAS, which is not even a regular army. HAMAS doesnt boast of any tanks or latest weapons, neither do they match up to the Israeli Army in their numbers. This offensive in Gaza is sheer barbarism and terrorism by Israel and not a war. A war has two more or less equal and strong armies fighting each other, not the asymmetry of power seen in this Israeli offensive in Gaza. Dense and thickly populated civilian areas are not targeted in a war, as Israel has been doing over the past four weeks.
