Srinagar: Scores of political activists affiliated with the ruling National Conference Wednesday took out a procession and marched to the UN observers’ office at Sonawar. Mustafa Kamal led the procession, which comprised of youth, teenagers and women supporters.
The NC workers were carrying black flags, placards and banners seeking immediate stoppage of Israeli air strikes in Gaza. NC activists chanted anti-Israel slogans throughout their march. The party submitted a memorandum at the UN office seeking the intervention of the world body in ending the Israeli onslaught on Gaza that has so far left over 200 people dead and hundreds others, mostly children and women, injured in the week-long offensive.
The show has irked the separatist woman leader Asiya Andrabi who has termed the march as a farce. Andrabi, who heads Dukhtaran-e-Millat (Daughters of Muslim communion) castigated the National Conference for “shedding crocodile tears on Gaza killings.”
In an interview with a local news agency , Andrabi said that the National Conference government has been flexing muscles before the unarmed youth who take to streets against Israel. For past six years this party has shrunk the space of Hurriyat leaders and common people. With which face it marched towards UNIMOGIP on Wednesday when it places Hurriyat leaders frequently under house arrest and restrict the movement of the people whenever they forward a protest call. July 13 is an eye-opener for Kashmiri people as on this day, this government not allows a common Kashmiri to offer prayers at the grave yard of martyrs, she said.
Aasiya Andrabi said that National Conference believes in exploitation and from past six decades it has been continuously exploiting the people. This party knows that it will wipe out from the map of the Jammu and Kashmir if it will allow separatist leaders and people to come on roads freely, she said adding that todays NC march was nothing but an attempt to exploit the sentiments of people for vote bank.
In his prompt reaction to Andrabi’s contention, Kamal said the Hurriyat leaders were a threat to peace as “they propagate violence wherever they go.”
These Hurriyat leaders keep stones with them to disrupt the peace whenever they get opportunity, he said adding that government has no option but to restrict the movement of Hurriyat leaders to maintain peace and order in the State.”
Legislator Kamal revealed that a separatist leader after seeking permission from the government to hold a march instigated people to set a government building on fire. Government is helpless and it has no option but to curb the movements of separatist leaders as it does not want common people to suffer, he said adding that Hurriyat is losing ground in Kashmir with every passing day.
