SRINAGAR: Srinagar police launched a special drive against non local beggars who have swarmed the city these days causing annoyance to the general public.
On the directions of SSP Srinagar, Amit Kumar city police launched a special drive against the beggars.
So far police has arrested 37 local and non local beggars. A number of public delegations had apprised SSP Srinagar about the mushroom growth of beggars in city who create nuisance at public places and places of worship.
The menace of begging is assuming alarming proportions in city and other districts. All the arrested beggars were produced before the local magistrates under Jammu and Kashmir Beggary Act, 1960 who have ordered their push back to their native places.
Hundreds of beggers from different Indian states decended on Srinagar every summer to make quick bucks.
The trend picks up during Ramzan as people here donate alms liberally.
Amit Kumar reiterated that the drive will continue in the future also.
