Srinagar: The Bollywood’s fresh take on Kashmir Haider, which is set to release in October, has released the two-minute trailer, evoking mixed response from Kashmir audiences. The Vishal Bharadwaj thriller was largely shot in Kashmir.
Many from the expatriate youth have posted angry outbursts. “Haider is yet another Bollywood crap on how Pakistan misguided Kashmiri youth.” Others, however, have found it a treat that reconnects a modern Kashmiri with his paradoxical political realities. Most of the students here say the movie is an eye opener for the outside world about the happenings in Kashmir. However, the depiction of the main character, played by Shahid Kapoor, as a throughout gunman has raised many an eyebrow. If this is the face of the movie wherein much violence and bloodshed is shown, we can imagine what the movie is going to be all about, said Zahoor Ahmad, a business man from the summer capital.
Another group of students said that the movie must be an eye- opener for the people who consider Kashmir a normal place of living. In actual there is lot that is yet to be narrated to the world about this place. We hope that the movie has done its bit, said Faizan Ahmad, a computer applications student in Kashmir University.
Several others stated that they were really scared to think whether the movie had projected Kashmir in true sense or not. It is yet to be seen whether the movie is a different entity or the same that projected Kashmir as nothing but a place of bloodbath and mayhem, said Aamir Mukhtar, a commerce student.
Haider is an upcoming Indian drama film directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, and written by Basharat Peer and Bhardwaj. It is an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, and is set in Kashmir. The film stars Tabu, Shahid Kapoor as the eponymous protagonist, Shraddha Kapoor and Kay Kay Menon. Haider is the third installment of Bhardwaj’s Shakespeare trilogy after Maqbool (2003) and Omkara (2006). The film is scheduled for release on 2 October 2014.
Bhardwaj has reportedly assured J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah that the film would have nothing to harm the local sensibilities and the political aspirations. The shooting was completed by 24 February 2014. Tabu is playing the role of step-mother of Shahid in the film. UTV and Vishal Bhardwaj launched the trailer of Shahid Kapoor-Shraddha Kapoor starrer Haider at an event in Mumbai on 8 July.
