JERUSALEM: Israel launched a major air and sea assault on the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip on Tuesday, striking at least 50 sites in the densely populated strip while the Jewish state was reportedly mobilizing troops for a possible ground invasion.
The army said its offensive, dubbed “Operation Protective Edge,” is aimed at striking Hamas and ending the rocket fire that has intensified in recent weeks amid tensions over the tit for tat killings last week.
At least six Palestinians were killed and about 25 wounded in an Israeli attack on a house
in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday, the Palestinian Interior Ministry said.
Local residents said the dwelling belonged to the family of a Hamas member and that the casualties occurred when it came under attack for the second time today.
After the first strike, people had gathered on its roof as “human shields”, hoping their presence would deter a second strike, the residents said. The Israeli military had no immediate comment.
Israeli raids were reported all over the Gaza Strip, including Gaza City, with jets attacking empty training camps belong to Palestinian fighting groups.
Palestinian officials said two air strikes were launched before dawn against homes in southern Gaza. Medics said nine people suffered shrapnel injuries.
Israeli planes also dropped leaflets in the north of the Gaza Strip calling on residents to inform on fighters.
The army ordered hundreds of thousands of Israelis within a 40-kilometer (25-mile) radius of the Gaza Strip to stay indoors, including Israelis in the major southern city of Beersheva, Lerner said.
