VARANASI/ Bangalore: Two gory tales of extreme violence have been reported from the north and south of India. In Telga village of Bhadohi district in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, a tantrik allegedly killed a 12-year-old boy in a case of human sacrifice last month. The police said the accused, who was arrested on Sunday, 29 June, had confessed to the crime.
TOI reports that according to sources, the boy, Sumit, had gone missing on May 12, 2014, and his father had lodged a complaint the next day. Three days later, the boy’s body, bearing several injury marks, was found at an isolated place near the village.
“Judging by the body’s condition, we believe the boy was suffocated to death before his eyes were gouged out and his hands chopped off,” said a police officer. “Suspecting a case of human sacrifice, we nabbed tantrik Upendracharya alias Upendra Tiwari and two of his aides, Ravindra Sharma and Shivbhawan Sharma, on Sunday.”
Protesting villagers ransacked and torched the houses of the two men on Monday, 30 June, prompting police deployment in the area to keep the situation under control.
Meanwhile, down south, in Tunganagar, Magadi taluk of Ramanagaram district, about 12km from Bangalore city, a 45-year-old man allegedly attacked his three daughters with a machete at home on Monday, 30 June evening, killing the two younger girls and critically injuring the eldest. TOI reports that while Monisha, 7, and Monica, 10, died, Dharini, 14, is battling for life in a private hospital.
Ramesh, an autorickshaw driver whose vehicle had been seized by those who had lent him money, allegedly tried to kill himself with the same machete, after he was driven to desperation from debt. Jurisdictional Ramanagaram district police did not reveal where they found Ramesh who was admitted to a nearby private hospital. Neighbours said Ramesh’s autorickshaw had been seized rendering him jobless. “One of us tried to get him a job of an office assistant but it did not work out. Ramesh was frustrated that he didn’t have a job,” they said.
He reportedly attacked the girls at around 7pm when their mother Gowramma was at work. A neighbour reportedly visited their first-floor home and asked for Gowramma. The children told the neighbour that she was expected to return soon.
After the neighbour left, Ramesh walked into the house and bolted the doors. He went to the kitchen and took out a machete, but in his hurry, he dropped some vessels. Realising that the girls had been alerted by the noise, he reportedly barged into the bedroom and attacked the kids sitting on the bed.
Monisha, who was hit on her head, died instantly. Monica was hit on the neck and she too died on the spot. Dharini was hit on the jaw. Building owner Annapoorna said she heard a commotion and rushed out of her ground floor house and went to Ramesh’s house.
She raised a hue and cry on seeing Ramesh attacking the girls. Even as Ramesh fled, other neighbours arrived on the scene and rushed Dharini to hospital.
Anupam Agrawal, superintendent of police, Ramanagaram district, confirmed that Ramesh was in custody.
