Srinagar: Hundreds of saffron cultivators Wednesday staged demonstrations against the continuous soil mining in the saffron fields of South Kashmirs Pampore town.
The protestors alleged that some industrialists who are hand in glove with the government officials are hell bent to destroy the saffron industry in Kashmir for their petty gains.
The protestors said that last month the revenue officials along with police had arrested three persons and seized JCBs and trucks for illegally resorting to soil mining in the saffron fields but yet again the vested interests have started their illegal activities and are indulging in soil mining during night hours.
Soil mining in saffron fields is going on in Chandhara, Galandar, Putil Bagh, and other villages. These saffron fields are turning into waste land now. Scores of JCBs and tippers could be seen busy in digging soil and ferrying it to other places without any fear during night hours, a protestor Mushtaq Ahmed, said.
He urged upon the administration to stop the illegal work.
Addition Commissioner Pulwama Munir-ul-Islam admitted that some vested interests are indulging in illegal soil mining in Pampore. He said that the district administration has informed the SP Awantipora about the matter.
He has assured stern action against these vested interests, the ADC said.
