Srinagar: The fresh revelations suggest that the J&K Police is likely to be locked in yet another war should the normalcy return to the state. This could well be the war on drugs. Inspector General of Police Kashmir A G Mir Tuesday disclosed that the police have arrested over 350 persons involved in drug related activities for past one and a half year.
Speaking to seminar in old Srinagar city, the IGP said that the menace of drug addictions being fought on the levels of law enforcement as well as awareness. He said J&K police started a Drug De-addiction Center in Srinagar in 2008 and subsequently two more centers were established at Baramulla and Anantnag. At least 30 qualified psychiatrists, counselors and yoga teachers are working at these centers.
“Shahri Khaas welfare Coordination Committee” had organized the seminar for the students, a Police spokesman said in a statement. The seminar titled Drug Addiction, causes and counter remedies was held in S P College auditorium.
Giving details about the Police’s policy against drug abuse, the IGP said in past year J&K Police arrested 247 persons involved in drug trafficking and registered 227 cases under NDPS Act . He said 2574 KGs of Cannabis and its derivatives and about 11 thousand bottles and 17 thousand tablets of psychotropic prescription drugs were also recovered.
IGP added that this year till date 113 cases of NDPS Act have been registered in which 147 persons involved have been arrested. 1000 kgs of Cannabis and its derivatives, 115 kgs of Brown sugar and about 1600 bottles and 14 thousand tablets of psychotropic prescription drugs were recovered by police in Kashmir Zone from the peddlers.
The Police Drug addiction centre has conducted 43 School Mental Health programmes in past year and half and has covered all the major schools of Srinagar city as also some schools in District Baramulla and South Kashmir. ” Focus is to provide awareness to school children for the prevention of drug abuse, besides 30 camps of Community Health Campus have been organized in almost all districts of the valley. He said that the results of these drug de-addiction centers have been impeccably above international standards.
