Srinagar: Locals in a city outskirt Tuesday night hauled up a policeman , who was trying to extort money from a family in Buchpora while posing as a militant leader, and handed him over to the police authorities, a GNS report disclosed. Quoting sources, the agency reported that the policeman Bilal Ahmad Ganaie is deployed in Special Operation Group, most feared anti-militancy wing of J&K Police, and was posted at Tral. The accused hails from Gulab Bagh in Ganderbal district.
Quoting family sources, CNS reported the intruder armed with AK-47 rifle identified himself as Jaish-e-Muhammad commander Abu Hamzah. One of the family members Hilal Ahmed said the gunman first accused them of being the informers of police and then demanded money from them.
I have come here with regard to Ahmednagar encounters. We have information that you acted as the informers, Hilal quoting the gunman said adding that they raised alarm and overpowered him. His another associate who was waiting for him outside the house managed to flee from the spot, he said.
The family members of Haji Ghulam Muhammad said that the gunman fired at least four rounds and one of the bullet pierced into his foot. We were shocked to see that the intruder was a policeman. His identity card revealed that he is attached with a police officer posted in Awantipora. His identity card revealed that he is the resident of Gulab Bagh Zakoora and his name is Bilal Ahmed Ganaie son of Ghulam Mohi-u-Din Ganaie, they said.
The accused has been arrested along with his assault rifle, sources said. The police team rushed the extortionist to the SKIMS hospital for treatment.
Reports said that soon after the incident people came on roads and staged a protest demanding stern action against the culprit. The government gunman was accordingly handed over to a police party headed by SP Hazratbal. The accused according to police is undergoing treatment in Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences Srinagar.
Reports said that people blocked the road for hours on Wednesday demanding stern action against the accused. They said the same person tried to barge into the same house on April 27 but police station Soura did not take cognizance of their complaint that time.
A police party from Soura police station headed by Station House Officer visited the areaon Wednesday afternoon and recorded the statements of the family members.
A senior police official while confirming the incident a case under FIR no. 48/2014 under section 457, 393 RPC has been registered against the extortionist and further investigations taken up in this regard.
He further said that another FIR 49 /2014 under section 336, 353 has been registered against the persons involved in the beating of the SOG man.
