Srinagar: Demonstration against water scarcity turned ugly when police allegedly beat up women protestors at Parrey Pora Baghat in the outskirts of Srinagar city.
Eyewitnesses told CNS that scores of women protestors from Nawach Bagh Parrey Pora blocked the traffic at Baghat. The protestors alleged that from past one month, they are facing acute shortage of potable water in the area. There is acute scarcity of water in our area. From past few days we receiving contaminated and muddy waters from the taps. We have to fetch water from other areas, a woman protestor Jameela Bano told CNS.
Another woman said that some days back few PHE officials visited the area and had assured the people that water tankers would visit the area on regular basis but their assurance proved to be lip service only.
Reports said that a police party from Saddar Police station reached on spot and charged the women protestors with canes as a result all but 8 women were injured. A woman while showing the below part of her bruised leg, alleged that a particular police officer namely Muhammad Yaseen thrashed all the women without any provocation and without listening to them. Which law permits a male cop to beat up peaceful women protestors. We demand immediate action that police officer who beat up even old women, Maimoona Banoo told CNS.
Some of the women protestors who received injuries in police action have been identified as Zareena Banoo, Maimooan, Jameela Bano, Zainab Akhtar, Khatija Banoo, Naseema and Urfi Jan.
Soon after the thrashing incident, Sub Divisional Police Officer Saddar, Feroz Ahmed Qadri reached on spot and pacified all the women. I sorted out the matter and definitely I will take care of it and will ensure in future no such incident occurs, Qadri said.
