Srinagar: Situation turned ugly in Poonch Jammu on Friday morning after a Muslim youth threw stones at a group of minority Hindu community. The Hindus were protesting against the alleged abuse of a girl passenger by a Muslim auto-rickshaw driver. The Hindu residents alleged that the auto driver slapped and misbehaved with the girl in full public view and assaulted her during a ride from Malti to Poonch town.
The girl belonged to minority community and people from that community took to streets and demanded immediate arrest of the auto driver whom police identified as Jamil Ahmed.
Police sources said that some miscreants pelted stones on the protestors during which four persons suffered minor injuries. As the news about the clashes spread the shopkeepers downed their shutters and people ran helter skelter. The protesters burnt down worn out car wheels on the road and blocked the traffic. Authorities have imposed security restrictions in the town to dispel the unrest.
A top police official said that the hunt has been launched to nab the erring auto driver. Curfew was imposed as a precautionary measure. Situation was brought under control after a minor incident of stone-pelting, the official said.
