SRINAGAR: Notwithstanding public outcry against random arrests Police continues to arrest and book youth from various parts of Kashmir, triggering protests by the affected parents.
Reports said Police on Wednesday slapped PSA on a young boy from Baramulla and shifted him to Sub-jail Kupwara. Zahoor Ahmed Mala son of Bashir Ahmed resident of the old town was arrested by police on the charges of stone pelting on April 27 last month.
Quoting police sources CNS Wednesday reported that Zahoor Ahmed was first arrested in 2010 on the charges of stone pelting and subsequently lodged in police station vide FIR number 36/2010. Even after his release he continued to indulge in stone pelting and was wanted by police in other cases as well, the agency quoted a police official as said adding that the accused has in past been booked for narcotic smuggling.
He is in custody under various sections of law including 148, 149, 332, 336, 307, 427 of RPC. Yes, we slapped Public Safety Act on him to prevent him from indulging in any illegal activities, S P Baramulla Mir Suhail said.
Police said that at least one dozen FIRs have been lodged against him in different police stations for his involvement in stone-pelting, arson, damaging public property and attack police personnel.
Meanwhile, the family of Zahoor Ahmed refuted the police claims and staged a protest outside police station Baramulla. The mother of the accused, Zoona Begum said that her son was bailed out by court on April 27, but police re-arrested him the same day and falsely implicated him..
Reports said that there was traffic jam in Baramulla after Zoona Begum and the other relatives of the arrested youth blocked the road. Police said that some youth resorted to stone pelting but no major incident of violence occurred.
Meanwhile Shopian police has arrested a young person, reportedly a class 9 student, on the charges of stone pelting, from Zavoora village of the district. Faisal Ahmed Mir son of Muhammad Amin resident of Bonabazar Shopian was, according to police, absconding for past several weeks.
Superintendent of Police Shopian Showkat Ahmed said that Faisal Amin Mir was part of the gang that attacked the Kashmir University vehicle in the town last month injuring some of the academicians critically. He is young but not innocent. We arrested him Zavoora village and everybody in the town knows that he is a known stone pelter, he said.
Station House Officer Shopian Javid Ahmed while giving details about the accused said that at least 11 FIRs stand registered against Faisal Amin in police stations of Shopian. He (accused) was arrested for the first time in 2012 vide FIR number 173 and in 2013 three FIRs vide number 121, 122 and 152 were registered against him for resorting to violence and stone pelting, he said adding that in the current year police registered 7 FIRs vide number 57, 64, 70, 76, 78, 83 and 84 under various sections of law.
SHO Shopian further said that police is going to have medical examination of the accused and it will also check his school records as they feel that he is not a minor.
Meanwhile, another top police official said that police will ascertain from school records and from other departments about his age and a decision in this regard would be taken accordingly.
A Bandipora family in North Kashmir Wednesday alleged that despite being bailed out by the Court, police is not ready to release their son from the custody. The family members along with others staged a protest in Nowpora Chowk of Bandipora and demanded immediate release of Feroz Ahmed Magray.
Eyewitnesses said that scores of people staged a protest in Nowpora Chowk of the town and amid anti-police slogans alleged that police was not honoring the court orders that clearly directed the release of Feroz Ahmed Magray of Wazipora who according to the family is going to marry next month.
My son who runs a shop was picked up by a local Army unit and handed over to police a month ago. Despite the fact that CJM Bandipora granted him bail the police did not release him, although the officials know that Feroz is set to be married next week, the mother of the arrested youth said.
Station House Officer Bandipora Mushtaq Ahmed, DySP Headquarters Zuhaib Ahmed and ASP Muhammad Yousuf declined to comment on the issue. When contacted, SP Bandipora Muhammad Shafi hung up the phone.
Meanwhile, a top police official said that the said youth is involved in different cases of stone pelting and instigation of violence. He has been bailed out by court in a particular case, but police has detained him in other cases in which he is involved, he said.
