Srinagar,: The School of Legal Studies, Central University of Kashmir (CUK) organized an eco-tour to Shankracharya / Suleiman Teng to spread awareness, educate students and campaign against vandalization of Western Himalayas.
The Western Himalayas starts from Uttarakhand and extends up to peripheries of Afghanistan. These are a source of major river systems which include Indus, Ganges, Brahamputra, Amu and Pangong Tso. More than 2 billion people, almost 1/3 of the humans on the earth survive on the water resources which originated from western Himalayas. Unfortunately, the Himalaya faces a number of serious issues that threaten the environment, biodiversity and human livelihoods of the region.
Professor Mehraj-ud-Din Mir, officiating Vice-Chancellor CUK also joined the students and hailed the efforts of Dr. Sheikh Showkat Hussain, Head of Department, School of Legal Studies for holding the event.
The Vice-Chancellor also encouraged the students for participating in such tours and opined that more tours of such nature be made possible for the interest of students and of the society at large.
All the faculty members of the School were present and guided the studentsinforming and educating them about the sensitivities of environment and ecology.
Dr. Sheikh Showkat Hussain conducted an on-spot group discussion to sensitize students about the following subject matter: Conservation of biological diversity and cultural diversity through ecosystem protection; promotion of sustainable use of biodiversity by providing jobs to local populations; sharing of socio-economic benefits with local communities by having their informed consent and participation in the management of eco-tourism enterprises.
