SRINAGAR: Even as the snow clearance work on the second difficult road of Ladakh region connecting Zaskar sub-division with Kargil Headquarter has been completed, the crucial Kargil-Srinagar is road is still closed. Officials said a team of mechanical division, Kargil, with the help of five bulldozers, achieved the feat in six weeks.
The Superintending Engineer of the Mechanical Divison Kargil Gagan Joyti said three machines were pressed into service from Kargil side and two from Zanskar side, which made it possible to clear the 234 Km long Kargil Zanskar road in just one and half months even as the winter witnessed heaviest snowfall in a decade.
The official further added that the final decision of the movement of traffic on the Kargil-Zanskar Road will be taken by the district administration, although the Highway is made motorable by the Department.
Meanwhile the Kargil-Srinagar Highway 1D is yet to be opened for traffic officially. India’s prestigious road building agency, Border Roads Organization has deployed at least 27 sate-of-the-art machines on both sides of the Zojila Pass. But the efforts are yet to materialize on ground, Ladakh News Agency reported Tuesday.
The road is closed for past six months and there is acute shortage of essential commodities and medicines across Ladakh Region. The road had been opened for one way traffic on May 10 but was again closed after two days by the order of the Divisional Commissioner.
