Separatists call strike, Govt responds with curfew
SRINAGAR: The tragic killing of a young man by the paramilitary personnel at Nawa Kadal overtook the general curiosity about the poor turnout and its impact on key players, National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party.
Eyewitness said a ding dong battle between young protesters and the Central Reserve Police Force ensued at the old city’s Nawa Kadal area while the polling staff was packing up the ballots and the security men were retreating from the fortified polling booths.
Quoting official sources a local newsgathering agency GNS said, “Stone pelters had mounted an assault on the CRPF and a jawan had sustained injury. In order to effectively disperse the mob the force personnel fired at a group of protesters near Nawakadal.”
The CRPF man Sandeep Kumar of 131 Bn is reported to have sustained injuries during the clashes, which enraged the forces who later fired at the mob, killing Bashir Ahmad Bhat who hails from Gratbal. Nazir Ahmad Kaloo and Haleema Bano wife of Reyaz Ahmad Shakhsaz of Gretbal Nawakadal are among those injured.
While Bashir Ahmad received a bullet in abdomen, a pellet fire had hit Haleema, sources said.
Medical Superintendent at SKIMS Farooq Ahmad Jan said, “a youth was brought dead to the hospital. He had received bullet in abdomen.”
At least three more persons were injured in the clashes that erupted in other localities of down town Srinagar after the news of youths killing spread.
Meanwhile Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, Yasin Malik and Shabir Shah have strongly condemned Bashir’s killing and called for shutdown on Thursday.
In the wake of tensions sparked by the killing, the district administration has invoked prohibitory law to impose curfew on Thursday in Nawa Kadal and other adjoining areas falling the jurisdiction of at least five police stations.
