Pulwama worst hit, clashes galore across South
SRINAGAR: Polling booths across four districts of South Kashmir remained largely deserted while the angry youth fought dingdong battles with police and paramilitary personnel at various places in Pulwama, Tral, Pampore, Shopian and elsewhere in the constituency. Officials claimed an aggregate of 25 percent voting in the constituency that comprise four districts Anantnag, Pulwama, Kulgam and Shopian.
Several members of the poling staff came under the direct attack of stone throwers in Pulwama district. Police and CRPF personnel fired in air to disperse the angry mobs. Police also fired several tear gas shells to thwart the protest demonstrations at Kulgam’s Khodwani.
Reports said second-run leaders from both National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party faced hostility as they toured various villages to take the stock of the voting, which could not pick up beyond 25 percent in aggregate.
The agency reports suggest that youth at various location in Pulwama, which witnessed the lowest six percent voting, shouted anti-poll slogans through the loudspeakers fitted atop mosques.
“People were asked through loudspeakers not to venture out of their homes,” said a villagers from Quil.
Reports informed that at least eight CRPF personnel were injured with more than 14 vehicles damaged during the stone pelting incidents at various areas. A bus hired by the election commission was also attacked by the protesters at Muran area of the south Kashmir. The window panes of the vehicle were damaged. Stone pelting incidents were also reported from Quil, Arihal and Bandzoo.
Police cordoned various polling booths in the Shopian area after the protesters attacked the polling stations. Several protesters have also sustained minor injuries after they were chased away by the police this afternoon.
Kulgam areas also remained tense with the deployment of security forces made in large number to thwart any untoward incident.
Angry mob also attacked some security police personnel at Qoimoh during the stone pelting incidents that rocked the area since morning. Several CRPF personnel sustained stone injures when the protesters threw stones at them in the area. Police had to resort to lathi charge and tear shelling to control the crowd.
