Srinagar Fear has gripped Panchayat members in the south Kashmirs Pulwama district, where suspected militants on Thursday night shot dead a Sarpanch of the main opposition party.
Mohammad Amin Pandith, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Sarpanch was shot dead by suspected militants near his house in Gulzarpora village of Qazigund in the south Kashmir district. His killing has instilled fear among the Panchayat members associated with several pro-India parties.
Were scared to move out of our houses ever since the news of Pandits killing reached us. The killing has deeply perturbed me and my colleagues, Gulzar Ahmad, a PDP Sarpanch who represents Beigpora village, said.
We are simply village heads and we have nothing to do with politics. People elected us to represent them. There may be rare cases where village heads may be doing things which are wrong, he added
He said he has decided to quit the post of Sarpanch in view of increasing number of militant attacks on Panchayat representatives.
I am quitting as village headman because of rise in surprise attacks on Panchayat representatives. I am the father of small kids. I dont want my family to bear the brunt, he added.
Meanwhile, police has registered a case FIR 34/2014 under sections 302 RPC and 7/27 I A Act in the incident and started further investigations.
