CHRAR-i-SHARIF: Security guards of Finance Minister Abdul Rahim Rahter lobbed dozens of tear smoke shells when agitated people attacked the cavalcade of the minister with fire-pots (Kangris) and stones near Chanmohalla, Watkaloo area of Charar-i-Sharief in Budgam district.
Eyewitnesses said that Finance Minister was on his way to Srinagar from Charar-i-Shiref on Sunday when people stopped his cavalcade near Chanmohalla Watkaloo. People stopped his car and complained about bad roads, non-availability of electricity and non-clearance of snow on roads.
Reports said that people forced minister to get down from his vehicle and walk on foot to have firsthand experience of the road condition.
A resident of the area said that some of the men, accompanying the minister, objected to the people demand resulting in a heated exchange.
This soon turned into a brawl and in the mêlée kangris flied towards the cavalcade amid anti-NC slogans.
Reports said windowpanes of the Finance Ministers vehicle were smashed. In a bid to control the situation and disperse the agitated protestors, the security guards of the minister bursted dozens of tear smoke shells, which created panic in the area.
According to the Station House Officer Charar-i-Sharief Manzoor Ahmed some residents near Chanamohalla Watkaloo stopped the cavalcade of the minister and briefed him about some problems they were facing. The police officer denied the reports of any attack on the minister.
Finance Minister Abdul Rahim Rather could not be contacted as his mobile phone was on diverted mode while no body from his office numbers responded. (CNS)
