SRINAGAR: The tourism department has blamed a foreign ski guide for violating its advisory that lead to a tourists death under an avalanche in Gulamarg on Jan 24.
Refuting a news item, regarding the death of Swiss skier Arno Roy in an avalanche in Gulmarg, Deputy Director Tourism Kashmir said that the department had issued an advisory for skiers about the threat of avalanche, besides, he said the advisories on daily basis were available on the departmental website and J&K Cable Car Corporation website, at all the phases of Gandola.
However, a group of skiers led by John Falkner, a guide, skied down from G-4 at around 11:15 am and took a right turn at tower no 14, he said.
While traversing a ridge Roy got caught in an avalanche while two of his fellow skiers had already crossed the ridge.
Department spokesman said the victim was dug out by the Falkner within 5 minutes, and the Ski patrol also arrived at the spot. The victim was given artificial respiration but did not respond and was subsequently brought to Gulmarg PHC.
He added that the department was grieved at the sad demise of Arno Roy.
