SRINAGAR: At least six army men had a narrow escape Wednesday after an avalanche struck their unit in Machil sector of north Kashmirs frontier Kupwara district.
Official sources said that the avalanche struck armys 20 Mahar post. However, minutes before it struck the post, the army men vacated it and escaped towards safety.
However, there was no loss of life or injury to any person in the incident.
Meanwhile, State Disaster Management Authority on Wednesday issued fresh warnings of high to moderate danger avalanche in several parts of Kashmir.
A warning issued jointly by Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE) and disaster management cell said high danger avalanches could occur at higher reaches of of Tangmarg and Khilanmarg in north Kashmir.
It said medium danger avalanche could occur at higher reaches of Banihal, Naugam, Kaiyan, Chowkibal, Tangdhar, Macchil, Gurez, Sonamarg, Zojila, Furkiyan, Drass and Kargil in Valley.
A disaster management official said that the warning has been issued keeping in view fresh snowfall expected in the areas. He, however, said there was no real threat to life or property as the avalanches are expected mostly in hilly areas.
Only two areas come under high danger avalanche warning and they are hilly areas. So there is no need to panic but people are advised to avoid movement during snowfall and not to venture in avalanche prone areas, he said, adding that the warning will remain in effect for next 24 hours, he said.
