SRINAGAR: Amid tight security vigil, Indian Republic Day functions will be organized all across Jammu and Kashmir on January 26 on Sunday.
All arrangements have been completed to for smooth conduct of Republic Day function and police and security agencies are on high alert to thwart any attempt to disrupt the functions.
Almost all major separatist groups have called for boycott of these functions and some have asked people to observe 26th January as Black Day.
The two major functions will be held in twin capitals of the State, Srinagar and Jammu, where the contingents of police, paramilitary troopers, young cadets and school children will march past the Indian flag and stage performances to mark celebrations.
Sources said that Finance Minister Abdul Rahim Rather will unfurl the Indian flag and take the salute in highly secured Bakhshi stadium in Srinagar, while as in Jammu, the winter capital, Governor N.N. Vohra will hoist the Indian tri-colour and take the salute on the march past in Maulana Azad stadium.
The security had been beefed up all across State days before the celebrations to keep militants at bay from disrupting the official functions. Highly trained commandoes have been deployed in and around Bakshi Stadium to keep a strict vigil there. Various residential houses located around Bakshi Stadium have been occupied by security personnel while various security personnel were seen patrolling on the roof tops of these houses.
Police and paramilitary troopers have been deployed on the roads across the State, especially in full strength and bullet proof bunkers were also parked in the middle of the roads outside venues of official functions to sabotage any attack.
Highly placed sources said that the mobile telephone services across the region will be jammed Sunday as a security measure to prevent militants from using mobile phones to trigger explosive devices or pass on information.
The connectivity according to sources will be restored late afternoon after the culmination of the official functions.
On Saturday police and security personnel conducted surprise checking in different parts of Kashmir Valley. Bikers and pedestrians were frisked while at number of places in Srinagar city the identity cards of suspected persons were thoroughly checked.
Police cordoned off the area around Clock Tower in Lal Chowk Srinagar and checked the identity cards of pedestrians and also frisked their pockets and belongings thoroughly.
