Massive Muharram Procession Chokes Old City Areas
SRINAGAR: A huge Muharram procession was Tuesday taken out from inside Khati Darwaza to remember the sacrifices of martyrs of Karbala.
Procession which began with the speech of Ittehadul Muslimeen patron Maulana Abbas Ansari in Botraj Mohalla in the afternoon culminated at Imambargah Hassanabad late in the night after passing through Kathidarwaza, Ranger Stop and Hassanabad.
Tens of thousands of mourners choked nearly four kilometer road.
7th Muharram is the last major procession in the city as two major processions of 8th and 10th Muharram have not been taken out since a ban was imposed on them by successive governments 23 years back.
Speaking to the gathering Maulana Abbas threw light on the tragedy of Karbala and significance of carrying forward the message of Imam Hussain (AS) to future generations.
He denounced the ban on traditional processions in the city and asked people to resist such curbs to keep the tradition alive.
Earlier JKLF leader Yasin Malik and Hurriyat leader Syed Saleem Geelani also addressed the gathering.
Members of Shia-Sunni Coordination Committee also participated in the procession.
