Ansari flays govt over continued ban on Muharram processions
SRINAGAR: Senior Hurriyat Conference leader Maulana Abbas Ansari Saturday claimed that the State government has released Syed Ali Geelani from long house confinement ahead of elections as part of its plan to ensure poll boycott in Kashmir.
Casting doubts on governments intentions Maulana Abbas said, on the one hand government has refused to lift ban on main Muharram processions and on the other it allowed Mr Geelani to hold public rally in Sopore.
If Geelanis Sopore rally was no threat to peace then how come Ashoora processions would be dangerous for the government Ansari questioned during an interview with a local news gathering agency CNS. Maulana Ansari said, it is a known fact that election boycott always proves beneficial for the ruling party and it will be Geelani who would help government to hit the proposed target.
Now Mr Geelani has been released and he would propagate election boycott which would help the government, Ansari said adding that government has evil intentions and it would go to any extent to attain its objective.
He castigated government for continued ban on Muharram processions in Kashmir despite its claims of normalcy. I approached the government thrice and appealed it to lift the ban on Muharram processions but the officials are dodging me. How can Muharram processions be a threat to peace when Shia and Sunni Muslims here live in harmony from centuries, Maulana Abbas said.
He said that government allowed Mr Geelani to hold rally in Sopore as it has to gain from it while by allowing Ashoora procession it would gain nothing.
Senior separatist leader said that police implicated scores of youth in false cases who participated in last years Muharram processions and they are still feeling the brunt of those cases.
Government should stop offending our sentiments and it should allow Muharram processions in Kashmir, he demanded. (CNS)
