SRINAGAR: At least three persons, including two students of the Islamic University of Science & Technology (IUST), died in a tragic road accident on Srinagar-Jammu highway near Pampore on Friday.
Eyewitnesses said that a Tavera Taxi (JK03D-1321) carrying nine passengers was on its way to Srinagar from Awantipur when at Lethapora, an over speeding tipper hit it head on.
Such was the impact that the taxi overturned resulting in the instant death of three passengers.
Six others were injured, two of the critically. They were all rushed to SKIMS, Soura.
The deceased have been identified Kausar Mohiudin Ahangar of Hanjivera, Pattan and Pir Sajad Bashir of Beeru Budgam both students of the IUST, Awantipur besides taxi driver Umar Farooq Reshi of Sael Charsoo.
A police official said out of the six injured two persons were referred to SKIMS in critical condition while four others were being treated in Sub District Hospital Awantipora.
He also said the tipper driver has escaped from the site of accident.
Quoting eyewitnesses he said that the accident was the result of reckless driving by the tipper driver. He said a case vide FIR 142/2013 under section 227, 279, 337,304 RPC was registered in this regard while the hunt for the absconding tipper driver was on.
