SRINAGAR: On the second day of Jhelum cleaning drive the volunteers removed heaps of garbage from Zero bridge to Habba Kadal.
Number of volunteers representing ML Higher Secondary School, Oak Hill School, wild life SOS, NITT Hazratbal, SSM College of Engineering, Adventure Tour Operators, Members of JKSMA and workers from SMC took part in the drive.
The Volunteers found scores of dead animals which includes cows, sheep and dogs floating in the river, they also found lot of waste from sacrificial animals. In todays move the team cleared lot of garbage and trash near Div coms office and its surroundings which was cleared and burned there.
At the end of the day the team removed tons of garbage from the river banks, a lot of floating trash was also collected by the volunteers. The senior members of Adventure Tour Operators Association of Kashmir made awareness about the water pollution among the masses living on both sides of the river. They also requested the religious heads of different communities including the chief Mahant of Hanuman Mandir to advise his disciples to desist from dumping the garbage and other waste near the river banks close to his temple which was later cleared by the volunteers in his presence.
During the move the ATOAK observed that number of trees have grown on the river banks close to some commercial establishments where the people throw their factory waste which hangs on these trees which makes the sight uglier.
The cleaning drive is going on under the supervision of Mansoor Ahmad Ward Officer SMC, Muhamad Yousuf President JKSMA and Rauf Tramboo President ATOAK.
