27th All India Postal Cricket Tournament begins at Srinagar
SRINAGAR: 27th All India Postal Cricket Tournament was inaugurated today by Sh. Taj Mohi-u-Din, Honble Minister for Medical Education, Youth Services and Sports Jammu and Kashmir in an impressive function held at Sher-e-Kashmir Cricket Stadium, Srinagar. This is for the first time that All India Postal Cricket Tournament is being organized in Jammu and Kashmir in which 13 states including the hosts are participating from 5 days from today.
Sher-I-Kashmir Cricket Stadium wore a festive look as the players of different teams took the march-past. Sh Taj Mohi-u-Din who was chief guest, took salute on this occasion and declared the tournament open. Teams participating in the tournament are from Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Delhi, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, Odhisa, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and host Jammu & Kashmir. More than 220 players and officials are participating in the tournament. Mr. Ajay Pandita Captain of the J&K Team who led the contingent of J&K administered oath to the players.
Speaking on the occasion, Sh. Taj Mohi-u-Din Honble Minister for Medical Education Youth Services and Sports J&K who was chief guest on the occasion complimented Chief Postmaster General J&K Sh. Chandra Prakash for hosting the tournament in Srinagar.
The minister said while Cricket provides the excitement of competition, it also provides physical, mental and social benefits. Cricket is the most favorite game of country as well as of Jammu and Kashmir. The Chief Guest exhorted confidence that the participating teams will act as ambassadors of Kashmir giving the real picture of the state of Jammu and Kashmir that it is as safe as any other part of nation and people are peace loving. He appreciated the role of the administration of Postal Department in Jammu and Kashmir for wide changes in the functioning of post offices in the state.
The Chief Postmaster General, J&K Sh. Chandra Prakash said that the All India Postal Cricket Tournament has been organized for the first time in Jammu and Kashmir. Cricket is a very popular game in Jammu & Kashmir and is widely played across the state. The hosting of All India Level Tournament in Srinagar will boost the morale of the local cricketers and give them wide exposure.
He said that J&K State has enormous potential to develop sports. With a view to showcase the beauty of Kashmir, the Department of Post has organized the All India Level Event in Srinagar adding that J&K Postal Circle has taken steps to develop footfall team, cricket team, athletic team, badminton and cultural team to encourage sports.
Mr. Jagdeep Gupta, Director Postal Services Jammu and Kashmir while making the welcomed address informed that this is for the third consecutive year that Jammu and Kashmir Postal Circle is organizing the sports event of national level. The tournament will last for 5 days from 21st to 25th of October and matches will be played at three grounds viz. Sher-I-Kashmir Cricket Stadium, Kashmir University Cricket Stadium and Islamia College Cricket Stadium. A total of 19 matches will be played in the tournament, informed the Director Postal Services J&K. Assistant Chief Accounts Officer, J&K Postal Circle Sh. Showkat Ahmad Parrey presented vote of thanks.
In the first match played between Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal, the hosts beat Himachal by 8 wickets. After winning the toss Himachal decided to bat and scored 111 runs for the loss of six wickets. Ranjit Singh and Devinder scored 41 runs each while Sandeep, Anil Khanna, Tariq and Ajay Kumar from J&K clinched one wicket each whereas two were run outs during the innings of Himachal.
Chasing the target of 112 J&K lost one early wicket but later managed easily to meet the target in 18.5 over. Manzoor Ahmad of J&K team scored 40 non out while Asif and Tariq score 37 and 29 runs. The captain was awarded Man of the Match.
In other two matches Odisha beat Bihar and Assam beat Gujrat. Playing first after winning the toss Bihar was bowled out on 97 runs in 19.1 overs by Odisha. The Odisha team reached the target in 12th over with SK Sirajudin, Man of the Match for 3 wickets in 3 overs and giving only 3 runs. In another clash Assam beat Gujrat by 7 wickets. Earlier Gurjat scored 147 runs but failed to secure win as Assam team achieved the target in 19th over with K Dass clinching Man of the Math for his 36 runs and 3 wickets.
As per tomorrow fixture J&K will meet Bihar, Rajashthan- Tamil Nadu, Gujrat-Andra Pradesh, J&K-Odhisha, Rajasthan-UP and West Bengal will meet Delhi. The matches will be played at Kashmir University and Islamia College.
It is pertinent to mention here that J&K postal Circle had successfully hosted the All India Postal Athletic Meet in the year 2011 and All India Postal Football Tournament in the year 2012. The Department of Posts in Jammu and Kashmir recently also recruited staff under sports quota.
