It has been the longest confinement period throughout his life
SRINAGAR: Expressing serious concern over the continuous house confinement of Huriyat (G) Chairman Syed Ali Geelani, the family of the senior separatist leader today said that it was affecting his health badly.
Dr. Nayeem Geelani, son of the octogenarian leader said that the continuous house detention has affected his fathers health. He further stated that due to the continuous restrictions being imposed on Geelanis movement, his feet and legs have swollen and that it has become difficult for him even to walk properly.
Dr. Nayeem further said that the long time house arrest of Geelani has affected him psychologically also. It is understood that when a person doesnt interact with the society on regular basis, he develops a strange mental trauma due to which many diseases in that person emerge.
Dr Nayeem mentioned that when Geelani was not permitted to offer Eid prayers in congregations, and to see the developments around, it was bound for him to remain physiologically ill.
He further stated that it has become difficult for his family to counsel or mitigate Geelani on this issue. Pertinently, the movement of Huriyat (G) Chairman has been confined to his home since March this year.
The Director General of Police Mr. Ashok Prasad recently stated that Geelani could be allowed only if he doesnt instigate people for violence. The police chief had further mentioned that police has reports that wherever Mr Geelani addresses people, the incidents of stone pelting follow and hence law and order in the state gets disturbed.
Mr Geelani has continuously been placed under house arrest since March 2013.
Giving details, Ayaz Akbar, a close aide of Geelani said that when Afzal Guru was hanged in Tihar Jail Delhi, restrictions were imposed on Geelanis movement in Delhi for more than 20 days. He was arrested at Srinagar Airport on March 7 and his movement has been restricted by the authorities ever since.
Akbar further claimed that this has been the longest house detention of Huriyat(G) chairman throughout his entire life. He is placed under house detention continuously for more than 228 days, during which he was only allowed thrice to visit the hospital for his health checkups. (KNS)
