SRINAGAR: Suspected militants spared the life of a CRPF jawan but thrashed him ruthlessly in broad day light and decamped with his service rifle in Tral town on Wednesday.
Eyewitnesses said that a CRPF jawan from 185 Battalion identified as Lakshwar Das had put down his Insas rifle beside him and was looking at passersby near Nai Basti in Tral town.
Sources said that few suspected militants caught hold of him and beat him to pulp before fleeing from the spot along with his service rifle. The jawan, part of a Road Opening Party (ROP) at Gankocha, Tral, suffered severe injuries and was rushed to Sub-District Hospital for treatment.
CRPF Spokesperson, Kishor Prasad while confirming the incident said that unidentified gunmen overpowered a CRPF jawan and decamped with his riffle.
The suspected militants fired some gun shots in air and disappeared from the spot of crime, he said.
Reports said that almost all the CRPF personnel deployed between Bus Stand and Police Station Tral maintain a wide gap during patrolling while some of them usually take rest along the road.
Meanwhile, authorities beefed up the security across Tral area and sealed all the entry and exit points of the town amid frisking.
Pertinently, in May this year militants after killing four army personnel decamped with two AK-47 rifles of the soldiers in Bucho area of South Kashmirs Tral town.
