SRINAGAR: State Vigilance Organization (SVO) Monday arrested senior IAS officer Baseer Ahmad Khan for allegedly misusing his official position for illegal transfer of government land in Gulmarg worth crores of rupees.
SVO presented the Challan against Khan, currently serving as Deputy Commissioner Kishtwar in much publicized Gulmarag Land Scam after the Government of India accorded sanction for his prosecution in terms of Section 6 of Jammu and Kashmir Prevention of Corruption Act vide FIR number 8/2009 VOK.
The Challan was presented in the court of Mohan Lal Manhas, Special Judge Anti-Corruption Kashmir.
Khan reported at police station, Vigilance, where his arrest was effected in connection with the Gulmarg land scam case, a senior SVO officer said.
Khan was produced before the court of Special Judge, Anti-corruption, and the chargesheet against him was presented, the officer said.
The court later released the IAS officer on bail and allowed him to report back to duty at Kishtwar, he said.
Pertinently, a PIL had been filed by two social activists of Jammu, Shiekh Mohammad Shafi son of Shiekh Abdul Rehman, former Member of Parliament and Prof S.K.Bhalla, a retired college principal and RTI activist, seeking prosecution of all those officers against whom the Vigilance Organization had established prima facie cases of corruption but sanction was being delayed by the state government.
The State Government was waiting for the nod from the Union of India to prosecute IAS officer and others.
Khan, who was Deputy Commissioner of Srinagar till March, was removed on the orders of the Jammu & Kashmir High Court which is hearing the PIL.
Five other accused officers, who have retired from service, have already been chargesheeted in the case. Among the accused is then Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Mehboob Iqbal, who has since joined PDP.
The SVO had registered the case against these senior officials in 2009 for allegedly misusing official position for illegal transfer of Government land in Gulmarg worth crores of rupees by misusing provisions of the J&K State Land, (Vesting of Ownership Rights to the Occupants) Act, 2001, also known as Roshni Act.
