SRINAGAR: In a tragic road mishap, five persons were killed and four others got injured critically, when a passenger vehicle (Tata Sumo) skidded off the road and fell into a deep gorge in frontier Kupwara on Thursday.
The bizarre incident took place around 10 am today near Zed Gali area of Machil Sector in frontier district of Kupwara in North Kashmir.
Police sources said that a Tata Sumo (JK09-1192) coming from Machil to Kupwara met with an accident when the driver Abdul Rashid Cheche, a resident of Sarkul Kalaroos, lost control over his vehicle and skidded off the road. The Sumo fell into a 300 feet deep gorge with nine persons, including the driver on board.
Five passengers died on the spot while four others received grave injuries, the official said, adding all the injured were immediately evacuated by the troops of 45 RR deployed in the area and shifted to the nearby army camp for treatment.
The victims have been identified as Hashim Jan wife of Mohammad Yousuf, Shameema Bano daughter of Mohammad Yousuf, Zameer Ahmed son of Ghulam Ahmed residents of Chuntiwari, Kalaroos, Abdul Rashid son of Mir Alam resident of Sarkuli Kalaroos and Hanuman Sharma a resident of Rajasthan.
The injured persons were identified as Muhammad Altaf Lone, Wali Muhammad Bagdi residents of Chuntiwari, Kalaroos and Muhammad Jageer a resident of Muzzafarnagar, Uttar Pradesh.
The deceased Humunin Sharma was running a canteen in 45 RR camp.
Meanwhile, police has registered a case and started further investigations in this regard.
An eyewitness, Zubair Lone said the mishap took place due to the dilapidated road conditions in the area.
Terming the incident very unfortunate, Deputy Commissioner Kupwara, Itrat Hussain said that the bodies were handed over to their respective families while one among the three injured person was shifted to Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences Soura.
