Khamenei: Nuclear Weapons Against Our Beliefs

TEHRAN: Reiterating Iran’s opposition to the nuclear weapons, supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said Tuesday that it was time for “heroic leniency,” and signaled his backing for the foreign policy of the new president Dr Hassan Rouhani.

Syed Khamenei reiterated Iran’s opposition to the possession of nuclear weapons based on the beliefs of the Iranian nation.

“We are against nuclear weapons not because of the US or others, but because of our beliefs,” Ayatollah Khamenei told a gathering of commanders of the elite Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps.

“And when we say no one should have nuclear weapons, we definitely do not pursue it ourselves either,” the Leader said, noting that Iran’s opponents pursue other motives in the dispute over Iran’s nuclear energy program.

Ayatollah Khamenei noted that a few countries do not want their monopoly on the nuclear energy to be challenged, but they do not make their real intention public.

The hue and cry by the United States, West and their allied currents regarding the nuclear issue must be perceived and analyzed within the framework of the deep-seated challenge between the hegemonic system and the Islamic Revolution, the leader said.

Khamenei rejected the assertion made by some Western powers that Iran was trying to develop nuclear weapons and accused such countries of a three-pronged policy of “making wars, poverty and corruption.”

“The hegemonic system and its affiliates pursue three main policies of warmongering, creating poverty and stirring corruption, and Islam is opposed to all these policies, and this opposition is the bedrock of the basic challenge with the Islamic Revolution,” Ayatollah Khamenei said.

Ayatollah Khamenei went on to note that the main message of the Islamic Revolution is to avoid doing injustice to others as well as standing up to oppressors.

“The main challenge between Iran and the West is the confrontation between the hegemonic system and the encouraging message of the Islamic Revolution, which is to avoid oppressing others and being oppressed.”

The leader also stated that the Islamic Revolution has offered a new order to humanity.

Ayatollah Khamenei said hegemonic powers have “divided the world into two sections of the oppressors and the oppressed,” while the Islamic Revolution has introduced the logic of fighting against oppression and refraining from doing injustice to others.

“Due to this logic, the message of the Iranian Islamic Revolution has not remained contained within Iran’s borders and has been welcomed by nations,” the Leader said.

He also described tyrannical governments and their allies, and international plundering networks as the main adversaries of the Islamic Revolution’s message.

Although Ayatollah Khamenei said the Islamic republic must never abandon its revolutionary ideals and objectives, he said it was time to address Iran’s diplomatic disputes with major world powers.

“I agree with what I called ‘heroic leniency’ years ago,” Syed Khamenei said, “because such an approach is very good and necessary in certain situations, as long as we stick to our main principles.”

Khamenei’s words were the clearest indication to date that Rouhani’s government has the supreme leader’s support, which will be essential in reaching any deals with the United States and other world powers over Iran’s nuclear activities.

The supreme leader’s comments came just ahead of a scheduled trip to New York by Rouhani and his foreign policy team for the annual U.N. General Assembly.
