SRINAGAR: At least five militants were killed in a fierce encounter with government forces in Kangan area of Ganderbal district early on Friday.
Official sources said that acting on a tip off, armys 24 RR and Special Operations Group (SOG) of J&K Police cordoned off the Prang-Wasun area in Kangan early today.
As soon as the joint party approached besieged houses for searches, militants present there opened indiscriminate fire ensuing a fierce gunbattle which lasted for about 2 hours, these sources said.
According to police during the gunfight, five militants, including a district commander of Lashkar-e-Taiba, Assadullah Bai were killed.
