ANANTNAG- Government is taking innumerable steps for reactivating the Handloom Sector of the state to make it attractive for more and more people especially educated unemployed youth so that they can earn their bread and butter besides rediscovering Kashmiri Art. This was stated by Mr. Sourab Bhagat, Secretary, Industries and Commerce (I&C) while inaugurating Fifteen days Handloom Expo-13 at Pahalgam.
The Expo was organized by the Department of Handlooms in association with J&K Handloom Development Corporation and other allied departments.
Besides MLA Pahalgam Mr. Mohammed Rafi Mir who presided over the event, MD J&K Handloom Development Corporation, MD J&K Cements, MD J&K Minerals, Director Geology and Mining, Secretary KVIB, Director Handloom and CEO Pahalgam Dev Authority were also present on the occasion.
Thirty Seven stalls containing the materials of different kinds prepared by weavers all over the state of J&K have been installed in the Expo which was inspected one by one by the visiting dignitaries.
Speaking on the occasion Secretary, I&C emphasized the need to involve the younger generation with the cottage industry as it is 2nd biggest sector of employment after Agriculture in the state. Giving details he said that the main aim of the 15 day Expo is to expose the material prepared by handloom weavers sponsored by the Department and provide them with a better market facility under one roof besides giving them a chance to exchange their expertise with other manufacturers. Secretary also informed the participating artisans that to protect the quality and standard of the Kashmiri handloom products, central Government has now formulated a Handloom Mark to be inscribed on the original material and the buyers will be educated to buy the original material with these marks only.
Speaking on the occasion, MLA Pahalgam, Mr. Rafi Mir who presided over the event, expressed gratitude to the department for choosing Pahalgam for this years expo. He exclaimed with joy that the expo in which weavers from across the state are participating exhibits brotherhood among different communities of the state. He told that peace is a primary prerequisite for employment generation in the state.
