SRINAGAR: Expressing shock over the communal clashes in Kishtwar and other adjacent areas, Chairman Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Shah Geelani has appealed both the communities to maintain mutual brotherhood and thwart the evil designs of sectarian elements.
In a statement, Hurriyat Chairman while castigating the role played by VDC members in Jammu region said their very existence is the root cause of all problems in the region. The members affiliated with these committees are responsible for present turmoil and are involved in killing, rape, arson and extortion.
The people of Jammu region for last several years face worst type of atrocities by the hands of VDC members. It is since last few months that they have unleashed a reign of terror in the region and are involved in target killings, rape and extortion, Geelani said.
He said that in order to deviate the attention from their ill designs, some elements for their vote bank politics are hell bent upon sowing the seeds of communalism. We are in touch with the respected personalities in the region and are collecting the details which we would apprise people of, Geelani said, adding that we wont allow these elements to play with the sentiments of people.
Geelani said that people in Jammu Kashmir since last 65 years are striving for self determination and have offered unprecedented sacrifices to restore their fundamental and birth right of freedom. However, India and its agencies are trying to portray present freedom struggle as a sectarian strife against a particular community and at times while maligning the present struggle, attribute it to the result of insurgency being operated from other side of the border.
He said that both communities since time immemorial have maintained mutual harmony and brotherhood, however, some vested communal powers are hell bent upon tarnishing the fabric of mutual brotherhood.
Blaming civil and police authorities for their negligence Syed Ali Geelani said they failed to provide security to the lives and property of people. Though local people while raising their voice by staging a number of protest demonstrations against the state sponsored terrorism and excesses committed by VDCs, some vested sections, for their political interests and vote bank politics turned it into a communal strife.
He also criticized local administration and police for their failure, It is police which remains mute spectator till the situation takes ugly turn.
The Hurriyat Conference Chairman in his appeal to both communities stressed to avoid all such activities which may prove detrimental for mutual brotherhood. While expressing his grief over the loss of precious lives and properties, Syed Ali Geelani extended his sympathy and expressed his solidarity with the affected families.
