JAMMU/KISHTWAR: Situation continued to be grim in Jammu division of the state, two days after communal violence rocked Kishtwar town. On Sunday curfew was extended to other towns of the division including Jammu city, Udhampur, Rajouri, Reasi and Lakhanpur.
In curfew bound Kishtwar itself situation was described as serious as one more person, injured in Eid day clashes died at a local hospital. 40-yr-old Lassa Mohammad, who was injured in clashes in Paddar area, died late last night, reports said. This has raised the death toll to three.
Curfew was clamped in Jammu last night and the Army was called out after several shops of minority community were set on fire. Incidents of violence, including burning of public property also prompted authorities to impose curfew in Rajouri district.
On Sunday curfew was extended to Udhampur, Samba, Kathua and Bhaderwah town in Doda, affecting 8 out of 10 districts in Jammu region and officials said relaxation will be given only after reviewing the situation on Monday
Monday is also the last day of three-day bandh call given by BJP and other organisations including Jammu Chamber of Commerce and Bar Association.
Fresh protests and clashes meanwhile continued in Jammu city, Udhampur and Kathua towns on Sunday despite curfew restrictions.
Mobile internet services were suspended on Sunday to prevent rumor mongering.
Jammu university postponed all exams scheduled for next few days.
Meanwhile army remained on alert in Kishtwar town which was declared out of bounds for politicians by the state government fearing their arrival will only vitiate the already volatile atmosphere.
Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley was detained as he arrived at the airport here on his way to Kishtwar, drawing sharp reaction from the BJP which termed it as undemocratic.
He was sent back to Delhi at around 1545 hours by flight, officials said.
BJP Rajya Sabha MP from Punjab Avinash Rai Khanna, who was to accompany Jaitley to Kishtwar, was also detained by police while he was trying to enter Kathua this morning.
PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti claimed she was prevented from leaving her house in Srinagar for visiting violence-hit areas in Jammu region.
Chief minister Omar Abdullah, addressing press conference in Srinagar, said the visit of Arun Jaitley was politically motivated and it wont help the administration in restoring normalcy.
