Srinagar: As a goodwill gesture on the eve of Shab-e-Qadr and Eid-ul-Fitr Jammu and Kashmir Police have released 50 youth who were allegedly involved in stone pelting incidents and were arrested by the police.
Sources said that 24 alleged stone pleters were released by city police north, 14 by city police south and 12 by Hazratbal police. The police have appealed the parents of youth to make sure that their children arent involved in stone-pelting henceforth.
Ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr in 2011, the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had announced that his government will withdraw the charges against nearly 1200 youth booked on the charges of stone-pelting in 2010 summer unrest. The youth should consider this gesture of the Government as the gesture of elders towards the young and as an Eidi (Eid Gift) on the occasion of Eid, Omar had said.
However, families of most of these youth and separatist leaders later claimed that in most of the cases charges were not withdrawn against the youth and they continued to face harrasment by the police. kns
