Srinagar: An overnight cloud burst followed by flash floods caused damage and severe destruction of houses, property and agriculture land in Kargil district. Though there was no loss of life reported due to the natural calamity, but floods damaged many houses located in the mountains and damaged kanals of agriculture land.
Minister of state for information technology and MLA Zanskar Feroz Ahmad Khan told KNS that preliminary assessment suggested that at least seven structures have been damaged at various places and several kanals of agriculture land have been damaged due to natural calamity.
He said district administration along with police parties is assessing the damage. It will take some time before the actual cost of damage could be assessed, the flash floods also damaged highway as well and with cloud bursts brought flash floods and accumulation of mud lead to closure of Highway, he said.
The Minster told KNS that he visited the affected area and directed the Beacon authorities to take every step for the reopening the Highway. The Minster directed the authorities to assess the loss of the property so that they would be compensated out of the Natural Calamity Relief fund.
Pertinently on Thursday one person was swept away and several private and government properties were damaged due to a cloudburst triggered by heavy rains in Jammus Kishtwar district. (KNS)
