Srinagar: At-least five civilians including a woman were injured when police resorted to teargas shelling and fired pellets to quell a protest demonstration in Nowhatta area here on Friday.
The protests, sources and eyewitnesses said, ensued after Jumat-ul-Vida prayers at historic Jamia Masjid.
They said that hundreds of protests mainly youth, assembled outside Jamia Masjid and staged a protest demonstration. A group of youth among them, they said, marched towards Nowhatta police station and started pelting stones at it.
The police retaliated by resorted to baton charge and teargas shelling, triggering panic among the people who had converged in large numbers for the special prayers at Jamia.
As the teargas shelling had at a little effect on the irate protesters, the police fired pellets to disperse them. At-least five persons including pedestrian sustained injuries and they have been identified as Nadeem, Saqib, Syed Mehmood and Showkat Ali Wani of Nowhatta and Shamima of Alamgari Bazar here.
