Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir High Court Wednesday directed government to file response within two weeks to a Public Interest filed by fishermen community from Bandipora in north Kashmir, seeking details about timber as well as benefits provided to them under AAY scheme.
The directions were issued by a division bench comprising Chief Justice M M Kumar and Justice DS Thakur after Advocate General M I Qadri stated it week take two weeks to file the response since the issues highlighted in the PIL pertain to various department including Forest, Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CAPD) and Fisheries.
Advocate Nazir Ahmad Malik, who filed the PIL on behalf of the Mahi Geeran and Singara Kashan Association (fishermen community), told KNS that he informed the court the fishermen were entitled to benefits under SRO-126 (Dated 28-06-1994).
Subsequently, the court asked the AAG to file the response within two weeks, he added.
The PIL seeks directions to the government on number of issues including details regarding timber supplied in Sonawari, Gurez and Bandipora from 2005 till date.
The PIL also seeks details as how much square feet of timber has been given to fishermen of Bandipora in accordance with government orders.
It also seeks directions to the government to produce entire record of the ration provided to fishermen of Sumbal Sonawari, Gurez and Bandipora under BPL and AAY scheme. The PIL also seeks details about the number of AAY scheme cards issued to the fishermen and benefits provided under the scheme to those who are houseless.
It also seeks details regarding timber issued to fishermen for construction or repair of boats on concession rates as per government order.
Lastly, the PIL seeks measures take to accommodate fishermen community in Wullar Development Project as per Chief Ministers announcement.
