Ladakh not heading towards UT status, PDP will never secure majority
Srinagar: As the Congress moved closer to carve out a separate state of Telangana, chief minister Omar Abdullah apprehended the fallout of the move in the state.
Opposing the bifurcation of state of Jammu and Kashmir on Telangana lines, Omar said that he believes it is very important that state like Jammu and Kashmir, even with its diversity, should always remain united.
Talking to reporters on the sidelines of a function at Amar Singh College Srinagar, Omar Abdullah warned that the states created on the basis of agitations could act as incentive to those who are agitating for similar demands from other parts of the country.
Are you encouraging people that you agitate for few years and you will get a separate state? What you would reply to the people of Jammu if they come on roads and would demand for a separate state. Would you tell them keep on agitating for 8 to 10 years and your demand would be fulfilled? Omar questioned.
“The UPA of which National Conference is an alliance partner, unanimously decided in favour of Telangana,” RLD leader and Union minister Ajit Singh told reporters after a meeting of the constituents of the ruling coalition at the residence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
Interestingly besides others, National Conference patron and Union Minister Farooq Abdullah attended todays meet chaired by Congress President Sonia Gandhi.
NCP chief Sharad Pawar who also attended the meet said the UPA constituents were “absolutely unanimous” in endorsing the creation of Telangana.
Omar said that Telangana sort of precedent that we have set to create states on the basis of agitation is a dangerous development. Telangana is the state created on the basis of agitation. Its not created on the basis of any recommendations of a State Reorganization Committee or something like that. I believe that this is a dangerous trend because all we are doing is sending a message out that if you agitate enough, you would create a state, Chief Minister said adding that for the creation of a state it is important to form a State Reorganization Committee.
Omar Abdullah denied that Ladakh is heading towards Union Territory status. Ladakh is not reaching towards any UT status. The only thing that we are doing is making sure that whatever constitutionally has been guaranteed to them in the form of the Hill Council, those powers are made available to them. Please understand that there is still necessary administrative relationship between the State and Leh and Kargil.
While replying to a question, Omar Abdullah said that Mufti Mohammad Sayeed would never secure 50 seats. How can he resolve Kashmir issue when he would never reach this mark. He can say anything. Why he did not resolve the issue when he (Mufti) was in coalition with Congress and other parties and was having more than fifty seats, he said.
The creation of a separate state of Telangana today received the stamp of approval of the ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) which unanimously endorsed the move.
