SOPORE: Panic gripped Krankshivan area of Sopore town when unidentified gunman fired upon a Sarpanch at point blank range soon after he was coming out from a mosque after Friday prayers.
Eyewitnesses said that Sarpanch Khazir Mohammad Parray from Sangrama was fired upon by a single assailant after Friday prayers in Krankshivan. It was a pistol fire and the bullet hit his face, he said.
Sarpanch was rushed to SMHS Hospital Srinagar where he was operated upon. The bullet has hit his face and the part of the mouth has got damaged. We have shifted him to ward after operation and he is stable, one of the doctors attending on him said.
Khazar Mohammad Parray had resigned from the post of Sarpanch in the year 2012, however after some time he had taken his resignation back and since then was actively participating in social welfare works.
A police official said that the condition of the Sarpanch is stable while manhunt has been launched to nab the assailants. No militant outfit claimed the responsibility so far.
