SRINAGAR: With the arrest of a security guard police on Wednesday claimed to have solved Monday’s burglary at the State Bank of India ATM in Dalgate area of Srinagar.
The accused, according to police, was himself guarding the said ATM.
Station House Officer Ram Munshibagh police station, Inspector Nazir Ahmad said that on Monday, a written complaint was received that unidentified persons have broken open the Automated Teller Machine (ATM) of the SBI located near the Batra Petrol Pump Dalgate. By the time the concerned official of the bank could get an alert, the burglars had fled with the cash to the tune of Rs 2319400.
He said that acting o the compliant, police registered an FIR (108/2013) at Rammunishi police station here.
A Special Investigation Team of police headed by him was constituted, he said. The team launched investigation and during the course of inquiry, he said, one person identified as Ishtiyaq Ahmad Shah of Ungaam Beerwah was arrested.
Police sources said that few months ago State Bank of India had deputed Ishtiyaq as a guard for their ATM Branch located at Durga Nag Dalgate.
A few days ago Rs 25 Lakhs were found missing from the ATM and it was believed that burglars during the dead of the night might have looted the cash.
Police after getting inputs raided the house of the accused and recovered Rs 22 Lakhs from his possession. The accused during questioning admitted that he stole cash from the ATM.
SHO said that they have arrested the accused and have already registered a case in this regard.
