Army Says Major Infiltration Bid Foiled
KUPWARA: Army Tuesday claimed that it gunned down five intruders who were attempting to infiltrate into Kashmir Valley from Keran sector of Kupwara district.
Based on specific information from intelligence agencies regarding likelihood of terrorists attempting infiltration in Keran Sector of the frontline Division of North Kashmir, vigilant troops detected eight to nine terrorists moving in the forest area about 500 meters on our side of the Line of Control. The terrorists were immediately engaged by firing from the post located along the fence. The fire was very effective and resulted in the elimination of five terrorists, while the remaining flew towards the Line of Control under the cover of thick foliage, an army spokesman said.
He said adding that the incident occurred at around 6 on Tuesday morning.
Army further said that the area was inaccessible and full of landmines and it was difficult for their men to chase those who crossed the other side of the fence. So far the identity of the slain militants could not be ascertained and no arms and ammunition were recovered from the spot of the incident.
Meanwhile, in a hurriedly called press conference at 28 Div.Kupwara, General Officer Commanding 28 Brigade, Dilip Pandey said that the Army was unable to trace the bodies of the slain militants. There is a nallah and every possibility is that bodies might have drowned in the nallah. Search operation was on to trace the bodies and as far as our information is concerned, five militants were killed in the shootout, he said.
He said that these militants belong to Hizb and Lashkar-e-Taiba outfits. We had inputs that a group of militants was ready to sneak into our side and the Army accordingly laid siege of the area and gunned down the five militants, Pandey said.
He said that at least 300 to 350 militants were ready to infiltrate into this part of Kashmir while the Army was vigilant to foil their every attempt.
GoC refused to comment about the incursions made by Chinese Army in Leh.
