Bandipore: Police on Wednesday imposed curfew in Sumbal to foil the Markundal and Kondebal Challo call given by Syed Ali Shah Geelani. Stone pelting incidents were reported from many places in which at least two police officers were injured. Authorities put all the separatist leaders under house arrest. However, Geelani and Dukhtaran-i-Milat Chief Aasiya Andrabi addressed people through telephone and paid rich tributes to slain youth.
Geelani had called upon people to reach Kondebal and Markundal, to attend the 4th day of Irfan Ganai and Tariq Leherwal, who were allegedly killed by army on Sunday.
Reports said that authorities imposed curfew in Markundal, Kondabal, Naidkhai, Hajin and other adjacent areas of Bandipore and did not allow any one to proceed towards these villages. Large contingents of police and para-military forces were deployed to thwart any kind of protests. Barbed wire was laid on roads and mobile bunkers were erected at dozens of sensitive places.
Police did not allow any person to proceed towards Markundal and Kondabal and had sealed all the roads leading towards these two destinations.
Police had earlier detained separatist leaders including Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Shabir Ahmed Shah, Nayeem Ahmed Khan, Mohammad Yaseen Malik and Javid Ahmed Mir.
Despite strict restrictions and curfew, agitated youth resorted to stone pelting at many places including Hajin, Papchan, Sumabal, Kurhama, Barsoo, Palhalan and Pattan.
Scores of youth carrying green flags used public address system asking people to come out from their house and proceed towards Kondabal Mansbal, the residence of slain youth Tariq Ahmed Leharwal. Youth came on roads and raised anti-India slogans.
Agitated youth resorted to heavy stone pelting while police responded with tear smoke shells. Clashes continued for hours at Kurhama, Barsoo between the protestors and police. Station House Officer, Kheer Bhawani Imtiyaz Ahmed Mir and another officer from Jammu and Kashmir Armed Police received injuries during these clashes.
Heavy stone pelting was also reported from Papchan Bandipora, Naidkhai, Sumbal, Hajin and Palhalan. Police resorted to aerial firing and tear gas shelling at Hajin to disperse protestors. At least six protestors were arrested from Hajin are for their alleged role in stone pelting.
Panic gripped in Palhalan area when police used dozens of tear gas shells to disperse protestors who were protesting against the killing of two youth on Sunday. Although there was no curfew in Pattan area however people observed spontaneous shut down to mourn the death of two youth.
Hundreds of people from adjacent areas gathered at Markundal and Kondabal to pay tributes to slain youth.
Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Aasiya Andrabi in their telephonic addresses paid rich tributes to the slain youth and asked people strive for the freedom. India has killed our youth in cold blood and its army is indulging in murders and rapes. We as a nation condemn these atrocities and appeal International bodies to take a serious note of such atrocities, Geealni said.
Aasiya Andrabi asked people to get united against the common foe which according to her is India. All those who proves eyes and arms for India here are the enemies of Kashmirs and we have to be careful against such elements, she said.
Meanwhile complete shutdown was observed in Pulwama, Pampore, Sambora, Tral, Kakapora, Awantipora for the consecutive second day against the killing of three militants in Mandoor Tral. Agitated youth smashed the windowpanes of dozens of vehicles which were plying at different routes of Pulwama.
