Srinagar: Army on Sunday announced a probe into the killing of two youths in firing allegedly by its men and assured to deal severely with those found guilty.
The incident is being investigated and wrongdoings, if any, will be dealt with severely, army said in a statement, Sunday evening.
According to the statement, a joint operation was launched by the Army and J&K Police late Saturday night based on a tipoff about the presence of militants in Markandal area of Sumbal in Bandipora district.
On establishment of the cordon, a burst of fire was heard from the place beyond the cordon area. Hearing about a youth being injured in the fire, an ambulance with doctor and his team was brought in to attend to the injured, the army said, adding, However, the effort was interrupted by the mob and had to be aborted. Later it was learnt that a youth had succumbed to his injuries.
The statement further said that seeing the crowd build-up, the operation was called off to avoid any collateral damage.
Some time later, at 5.15 AM when the Army Ambulance, earlier brought in to attend to the youth, was being driven out of the area, it was attacked by a violent mob. The mob tried to set the Ambulance on fire and assault the doctor and the medical team. While disengaging, the troops fired in self defence, resulting into injury to another youth who later succumbed to the injuries, said the statement.
