SRINAGAR – Security has been beefed up in Kashmir in view of Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh’s visit on June 25.
Police and paramilitary forces have been deployed at sensitive places in the Srinagar City and other venues where the PM, along with UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, is scheduled to visit, official sources said.
Adequate security has been deployed along Banihal-Qazigund route where Singh is scheduled to flag off rail services on Wednesday (June 26), the sources said.
The Prime Minister is later scheduled to stay Tuesday night at Raj Bhavan where he will interact with legislators and leaders of different parties, said the sources adding that he would be returning to Delhi the next day after flagging off rail services at Banihal.
Prime Minister and UPA chairperson are likely to chair a high level meeting with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and other senior officers on June 25 here at SKICC, official sources said, adding that the revocation of AFSPA will be on top agenda.
The deployment of security and the diversion of vehicular traffic in the city has been done in a manner that it does not cause any problem for the common people, said the sources.
Pertinently, on June 19, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah chaired a Unified Command Meeting at SKICC, Srinagar. During the meeting, the intelligence agencies gave their inputs about militant activities in the state while as the Amaranth Yatra issue and security concerns related to it were thoroughly discussed.
The cross border infiltration, AFSPA and educated youth joining militancy also remained the prime concern during the meeting while as the decision related to AFSPA remained inconclusive.
