Pak violated ceasefire after infiltration bid foiled: Army
ISLAMABAD/POONCH: A Pakistani girl was killed Wednesday when Indian troops opened fire across the de facto border that divides disputed Kashmir, Pakistani officials said.
The incident took place in Rawlakot district, around 65 kilometres east of Islamabad near the Line of Control (LoC) separating the Indian and Pakistani-controlled sectors of the Himalayan territory.
Indian troops resorted to small arms and artillery fire in Battal area killing a 10-year old girl and wounding her mother, a senior security official told AFP.
He said Pakistani troops returned fire and senior local official Sohail Azam, confirming the casualties, told AFP sporadic exchanges were ongoing.
He said the girl died after shrapnel from a mortar fired by Indian troops hit her house in Battal area.
Local resident Imtiaz Ahmad told AFP that he and other members of his family were confined to their house because of Indian firing.
On Tuesday, Indian troops opened fire on a small village in Kotli town along the LoC, injuring a 65-year old woman.
Indian officials accused Pakistani troops of violating ceasefire in Poonch sector.
A group of four armed persons from Pakistan-administered Kashmir (PaK) were seen moving towards an Indian forward post in Krishna Ghati sector in Poonch district around 0950 hours, Indian Army spokesman S N Acharya, said.
He said alert Indian troops took position and opened firing on the infiltrating persons, adding that they were pushed back towards PaK.
As the infiltration bid was foiled, Pakistani troops opened heavy firing on Indian posts in Mandi, Krishna Ghati and Chakan-Da-Bagh in Poonch sector.
Sher Shakti, PP1 and PP2 in Mandi sector, Kripan and Kranti posts in Krishna Ghati sector and Bahadur, Rekha and Neck posts in Poonch sector also came under firing, he said.
They fired small arms and 82 mm mortars on Indian posts and Indian troops also retaliated, resulting in exchanges. The exchanges are on, he said, adding that there was no casualty or injury to any person on Indian side.Agencies
